This is where you tell me I'm okay!

The older I get the more I realize my need to write things down. Especially daily chores and activities. What I really need to do is set a schedule for myself and stick to it. I admit that I've tried going down this road before and once I have a schedule in place I tend to irritate myself because I don't like being told what to do and when to do it. AND I'M THE ONE THAT WROTE IT!
I'm a wing it kind of gal but that ain't working for me. Things just aren't getting done like they should. Here is a very vague run down of a typical day with me. Proceed with caution!

I'll start picking up the house and putting something away in one room and then find that I forgot to make our bed, so I make it. I then realize I need to hide the chocolate that's on my dresser from myself, so I go around trying to find a good hiding spot. (Trying to hide something on yourself is tricky!) While searching for that "secret" spot I see a tumble weed blow across the floor which reminds me that I need to vacuum. So I stash the chocolate in the nearest location and grab the vacuum. I have half the house vacuumed when I come to our office. I turn the vacuum off for a second while I pick the blanket that I were working on, off the floor and set it on my desk. While at my desk I find the recipe that I had printed out but couldn't find earlier, so I bring that to the kitchen and decide I'm hungry. I eat.
In short the only thing that really got accomplished that day was making my bed. LOL!
Do you ever have those days? Do you see why I need to write me a schedule and stick to it? All the while trying not to get upset with myself for writing it in the first place!
Is there a name for this condition? LOL!

Do you have a system that works for you? I'd love to hear it!
I need all the help I can get!
HUGS!

  1. I have no good advice for you. However, I do have this: Get. Out. Of. My. Head.

    That is all.

No, not really, lol :) I do have that same problem though!! Hubs said I need to carry around one of those little voice recorders like doctors do...but I'm afraid I'd put it down and forget where it was, LOL. So, when you find a solution, I'd love to hear about it!

  2. There is a name for it Kim. You're a popular sanguine personality and so you're supposed to be like that. I love it.

I always forget why I came into a room and get so distracted. I also have trouble at times while praying. Is that bad to say? It's just that I now started keeping a pad nearby so I can write down things that come into my mind so I can get back to praying.

    See, you're not alone Kim.

    Love you as you are,
    Debbie

  3. Girl we are on the same system. I swear I have ADD around the house. I can't finish one thing without starting something else or getting distracted. So I am of no help:)

  4. That's why women of a certain age shouldn't have more babies. We'd forget where we put them.

I'm also a lister. I tell my husband if anything ever happened to my desk calendar I'd be wandering around aimlessly, not sure what to do. It's like my brain is on paper and if it gets lost, so do I.

  5. I took an organizational class 25 years ago. It was by a woman who had a chain of cleaning companies. The some of the best advice on cleaning was a daily chart, weekly chart, monthly chart and seasonal chart. My 33 yr old still remembers these charts. With 5 children and homeschooling..it seemed my house stayed messier than my friends who left everyday.
Also when cleaning take a basket or bag with you to put objects in from other rooms and always when entering a room..start cleaning from the left to the right. It really does work.

    Good luck and good cleaning!!

  6. Your post sounds quite familiar with my own style! I had to smile! Not sure how old you are, but I just turned 40, and let me tell you, it gets WORSE-the forgetfulness, I mean! lol
Anyway, I did flylady in the past, and truthfully, it helped me a lot. I found that her emails could get to be a bit much, but I really did learn things from her that made a difference in my home. Her site is www.flylady.net

  7. Sigh. I also tend to rebel against schedules that I create for myself :-) What I try to do is stay in the one area I'm working on, even when I get distracted by the next 100 things that need my attention. I may not get the whole room fixed up but I feel successful if I got a few key things done before moving on to the next section. If it's an item that doesn't belong in that room, I toss it into a catch-all basket to be sorted later or just toss it out the door to be picked up on my way out. I get bored too, so after a few things that make one room decent, I switch to another task in a round robin way. Miki

  8. I love sticky notes - they are so handy for writing things I need to remember and I can stick them all over the house.

I don't do a shopping list - and generally I buy everything I need, however sometimes I buy things I already have in the cupboard. Only recently I noticed I had 4 jars of pickles in the cupboard - each time I went shopping I didn't think I had any in the house so I bought another jar!!

  9. I'm terrible about that, too! And you are right, it's totally frustrating to look back over a day where not a single job got completed as you wished.

I like to say I'm a recovering perfectionist (being kept in line by a family of guys.)

  10. Sounds like a normal day to me, LOL! I have honestly found the best system is to write up a "to do" list. There is something magical about marking off an item and feeling good about it. When you see a new chore, add it to the list. It helps to stay on track so that more things are accompished from beginning to end!

  11. Thats ALL I have is those days. And I am no better at sticking to a schedule so I better just be happy with the way things are!! ;)

    Be blessed-

  12. You forgot to mention the part where you call your best friend and then can't remember why you called, then talk for an hour anyhow. Hang up, then call back because you remembered "real quick" what it was you needed to say, then we talk for a bit more... :)

Ok, here's my help (like I'm ANY help at all, lol)...I write a list of things that I want to do this week. No pressure on the day. scratch them off if they get done, if they don't then no worries, move it to next weeks list. :)

  13. Well if you find out the name of that condition, please let me know. I definitely have it! Some days it works. Some days it doesn't. Oh well, one day maybe I'll get organized. Then again maybe not. Life would certainly be a lot less interesting!

  14. I have my day broken down into sections (i.e. early morning are for me, mornings are for my full time job, afternoons are for projects, etc.). What I get done within those sections is always different:-)

  15. No advice here!
I am right there with you! LOL

  16. You are definitely normal!

  17. Noooooooooo - I just had a literal "book" of a comment written and close to finished, then hubs called asking me to search for something in e-mail, which caused the browser to freeze and shut down, which caused my comment to disappear! :(

Sigh - I just can't recreate it right now. Just know the we are the SAME! I am working on a couple different ideas that don't involve strict schedules and will share if they work for me.

Maybe I'll come back later and try to remember my original comment. *sniff*

Big I-tell-my-own-schedule-to-talk-to-the-hand hugs to you!! Have an accomplishment-filled day my friend! :)

  18. Have you ever read the book "Sidetracked Home Executives?" You might get a kick out of it, lol! It pretty much talks about exactly what you just posted.

We've all had days like that, I think. I like a schedule because it keeps me on track and I like to write things down and cross them off.

However, there are just times when I don't want to do it.....

  19. You're OK, I'm OK, all God's chillun OK. Give it a few years and you'll be able to blame it all on M.I.A.D.D. 8-]

    Love ya loads, forgetful friend.
    Whoever you are... *g*
    Have a JESUS-filled day! ^i^

  20. If ya dont feel normal after reading this, not sure you ever will!

If you give a mom a muffin, she'll want a cup of coffee to go with it. She'll pour herself some. Her three-year-old will spill the coffee. She'll wipe it up. Wiping the floor, she will find dirty socks. She'll remember she has to do laundry. When she puts the laundry in the washer, she'll trip over boots and bump into the freezer. Bumping into the freezer will remind her she has to plan supper. She will get out a pound of hamburger. She'll look for her cookbook. (101 Things To Make With A Pound Of Hamburger.) The cookbook is sitting under a pile of mail. She will see the phone bill, which is due tomorrow. She will look for her checkbook. The checkbook is in her purse that is being dumped out by her two-year-old. She'll smell something funny. She'll change the two-year-old. While she is changing the two-year-old the phone will ring. Her five-year-old will answer and hang up. She'll remember that she wants to phone a friend to come for coffee. Thinking of coffee will remind her that she was going to have a cup. She will pour herself some. And chances are, if she has a cup of coffee, her kids will have eaten the muffin that went with it.

Love this poem because it is so true! Hoping you feel normal now and that you are now not hungry for a muffin & coffee! LOL!
