  3. My favorite was my Mom's Sunday morning creamed eggs on toast. It is basically chopped eggs in a white sauce, but we would all hang around the stove hoping the white sauce would thicken just a little bit faster. We would toast our bread & tear it into small pieces then pour the creamed eggs over the toast & season with salt & pepper. We would sit down together & eat before rushing off to church, because with eight of us kids, it was ALWAYS a rush - lol. Yummy!! I may have to make that today for breakfast now.

  5. I always knew that Christmas decorations would be going up soon when I found Mom hard at work making her German Christmas Stollen. These were always made well in advance so they could "ripen". Most stollens are made with yeast but mom did her's the old way with baking powder, glazed pineapples, dried apricots, slivered almonds, and martizapan. She always makes around 5 or 6 of them so friends and family can enjoy a taste of Germany.
Please enter me in your book give-a-way. Wish there were several of these books to give away. It looks really great.

Her homemade chili was also awesome, but she didn't have a recipe for that, so I've had to come up with my own. Desserts would be her Apple Brown Betty and Venetians...yummy! 52. I'm from a large family of 8 children, but even as a little girl (I being the oldest) I have fond memories of my mother baking bread, then just after it came out of the oven sitting on the cool cement steps with a THICK slice of steaming bread lathered with honey & butter dripping off onto my fingers to lick. YUM! I still have to have a slice just out of the oven when I make bread too, & sure enough I'm transported back to those cement steps on a hut summer day eating my mother's home made bread & thinking..."life couldn't get any better"!

  65. I remember when I was a little girl when there was a death in the community our church would fix lunch and take it to the home and serve it, then the ladies would eat and also do all the clean up, then attend the funeral. The family didn't have to do anything. Each lady had a certain dish they would fix. They knew immediately what to fix. My mom's was 4 chocolate pies: 1 cup sugar, 2 heaping T of flour, 2 T cocoa, can of evaporated milk, T butter, t vanilla. Stir dry ingredients together. Add liquids and on med heat, stirring constantly, boil until thick. Pour into baked pie shell. This was just for one pie. So she would x 4 the recipe. I miss those days. When daddy passed away in November 2003, this same church brought food to their house. One dish was missing though, mama's chocolate pies. She was not thinking of pies that day.

I am a big cookbook collector so please enter me into your contest.

The yolk from the hard boiled egg would be separated, smashed with a fork and crumbled on top of the white sauce that included the white part of the egg. We usually enjoyed this at dinner time.

Hmmm...I think my kids would love this too! :)

  137. One thing my mother was "famous" for was her "guest lasagna". Seems that for my teenaged years we had lots of kids and young adults running through our house and she always made the lasagna anytime we had guests. The first time I came home from college we had, you guessed it, "Guest Lasagna"! Still one of our family favs-Cathy Steiner

    Mom's Guest Lasagna
1 1/2 lbs. ground beef, fried up until pink is gone and seasoned with salt and pepper, garlic powder and onion powder.

1/3 onion, finely chopped but only if your family like onion

2 jars Ragu sauce, your choice on flavor but we liked the plain the best

    1 large tub cottage cheese

Large packages of mozzerella cheese, colby jack blend, parmesian cheese all shredded

    Lasagna noodles

Spray deep baker dish with Pam so it won't stick about 9X13 size. Put a little sauce in bottom of pan and swirl til it's covered. Layer two times: lasagna noodles, sauce, ground beef, cottage cheese, other 3 cheeses, sauce

Top with lasagna noodles, sauce and mozzerella cheese (so it looks pretty). Bake at 350 for about 45 minutes til bubbly and set.

Best kept secret-tastes even better the next day!!!

  141. Hi. My mom was ALWAYS a wonderful cook and baker. She learned to cook by her mother. Love them both so much. One of my favorite meals was mom's pork chop and sauerkraut suppers. She would brown the pork chops on the stove top and then add the sauerkraut to brown with the pork chop pan drippings. MMM she was the best cook. Thanks Gooseberry Patch. Happy Spring everyone. 147. My mom used to make "milk toast" for my brothers and I for breakfast. She toasted the bread, spread it with butter and sprinkled sugar on it. Poured warm milk on it, just enough to dampen. Sounds gross, but was wonderful!

  158. One of my most favorites of Mom's is so easy, but such comforting-Mom's-Hug foods.

    Apples, washed and cored
    a handful of wrapped caramels
    cinnamon
    water

Set apples in a lightly buttered 8"x8" casserole. Unwrap and place a couple caramels in each apple. Lightly sprinkle apples with cinnamon. Add a scant 1/4 cup water to baking dish. Bake in oven or in microwave until done.

Thank you for your reviews and yummy pics of the recipes you did from the Gooseberry "Mom's" cookbook.

  159. I loved my Mom's cakes growing up! It took her years to perfect them. I remember eating some cake that even dunking in milk probably couldn't hide the fact it was dry as a bone! But after a while she became the cake queen! She would make elaborate 4 layer cakes that she would stick a chop stick or two in so they wouldn't fall over. My brothers still come home for their birthdays so they can get one of Mom's cakes. :)
