No Sugar? Me? Seriously?

sugar-300x225

Once in awhile you come to a bump in the road that you just can’t get over. For me it was a combination of weight loss and lack of energy. So I got on the computer and started doing a little research and the more I read the more I realized that sugar was the culprit. I didn’t like that answer so I kept searching for an alternative and it kept coming up sugar. FINE! It’s sugar, now what? “Well,” I told myself “you gotta stop eating it. Wha? You heard me. You gotta stop eating sugar! But, But…..I love sugar!” That’s pretty much the conversation I had with myself once I realized my problem.

So on the night of September 21, 2011 I decided to just give up “added” sugar from my diet. Yup, just like that.  I was so determined and ready to do this that I barely slept that night. In fact I couldn’t wait to get up and start NOT eating sugar. How twisted is that?

The true test of my endurance would come 3 days later when my daughter had her birthday party. Did I cave? Nope. I didn’t eat one slice of the homemade strawberry cake with strawberry icing with chocolate ganache dripping down over it. Nope, not one lick! I KNOW! Yay, me!

So here’s what’s going down thus far. I’m on day 12 and have lost a total of 3.5lbs. YES!!! I didn’t even work out that first week because I did get a headache for two days because of my body rebelling against me and my energy was really low. BUT I kicked it into high gear the next week and I’m feeling great now. I have clearer thinking, I’m losing weight effortlessly and I don’t have cravings at all. I really feel like I can do this. It feels so good to take control of my health.

I’m keeping a food, mood, and weight diary of my journey. I’m thinking about putting it into a word doc. for those of you who might be interested in trying this. What do you think?

If you’re curious now, I suggest you simply put in a search for “Cutting sugar from your diet” and you’ll probably get all the info that I got when I was researching this.

There are also some books that you could check out from the Library, Sugar Blues and Sugar Shock are just a couple.

Now those of you that know me know that I love me some sweet stuff and so if you’re saying that YOU can’t do this, look at who you’re talking to. If I can do this anyone can!

Let me know your thoughts my friends!

HUGS!

  2. I quit eating sugar in college to clear up my acne and it worked. I didn't eat sugar for many, many years. My 22 year old daughter gave up sugar for 4 years. I think she just started giving it up again. Her face is much clearer when she doesn't eat it.

  3. Way to go Kim!! That is awesome!! My Dad always amazed me bc he would make a decision to give up sugar or caffeine, or .... STARBUCKS and then he would get up the next day and viola' ~ done. no more - not one drop! He never complained, never whined, nothing. He was just DONE. When he found out he had cancer he quit all sugar, all caffeine, and coffee, as well as a lot of processed foods. This was a man who went into starbucks 3-5 DAILY for A LARGE Iced coffee!!

I joined a weight loss challenge in Aug and am going to be blogging about it this week :) Losing weight and feeling great :)

    Love ya!

  5. Kim, I've been thinking about doing this for a while. I gave up sugar for a few months earlier this year and I really did feel good. I'm not sure why I started eating it again. I have a bowl of candy corn sitting on my counter that I have to finish first, then I'll join you on your journey. ;)

  9. You rock my friend!! Of course I would have started *after* the birthday cake - you are a crazy woman - LOL! So what do you use instead of sugar (Stevia?) or do you just have nothing that tastes sweet other than fruits? The first time I ever tried no sugar was a couple of years ago and really thought I'd have a problem because I thought I was addicted. It was no problem at all, but at that time I hardly lost any weight and didn't see any other visible benefits from it other than knowing it was good for me.

This low-carb thing seems to be working good for me and of course that means no sugar during the strict phase. I will be happy to add it back in in moderation later though!

Big you're-still-sweet-even-without-the-sugar size hugs to you!! Love ya!
